Woodgate Play and Fitness Area, Kingston

After receiving an external grant from a Marathon Fund application, Kier services and the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames (RBK) asked us to install new play features that would excite the local community. The initial stages included Kier services and RBK seeking a range of ideas from our expert team on how to maximise space through intelligent layouts, and where to strategically place equipment that would allow children to flow between the elements.

Once this was planned out, both parties wanted advice on extending safer surfacing within the site, a review of the quality of railings for enhancement or replacement, along with relocating the entrance gates and ensuring accessibility for all ages and abilities. This challenge excited HAGS as we pride ourselves in the variety of services we provide and our heritage of integrating inclusive play equipment.

We came up with the solution of a Pirate Ship themed play area in phase 1 and an Outdoor Fitness area in phase 2. This included a range of equipment in the design where children can play, explore, socialise, grow and develop through the wide range of opportunities available. The equipment installed includes the inclusive Spinmee roundabout, Duel, a UniMini multi-play unit, Vippy seasaw, Ski stepper, Preacher curl, Fitpoint swings featuring a Tango Seat and Springers. To meet the needs of older children we included the more challenging Nexus Altitude 11s and the Tornado, encouraging collaboration while also developing physical strength.

We produced excellent results in partnership and consultation with the community under a limited financial package. The new play and fitness area has invigorated this tired outdoor space in Woodgate and has given children a breadth of new opportunities to get outside and play!

Colin Stuart, RBK Project Manager “The community and Councillors have all been very complimentary about the great improvement to the play and exercise facilities on the site. It’s very rewarding to know that all the planning and hard work which went into the project is appreciated by those who will be using it as part of their local activities”.
